Self Esteem is Important in a Difficult Economy
The present turbulence in the economy will continue to have impact on individuals in many countries, not least in the US, even after an inevitable economic recovery.Feelings of helplessness may seem unavoidable to people caught up in sub-prime repossession, retrenchment from downsizing Companies and voluntary redundancy.
However the difference in a 21st Century recession, as opposed to historical examples, is the accessibility of the internet to the vast majority of jobseekers, which can offer realistic prospects to research jobs or opportunities, advertise current skills, or just as importantly develop new skills to add self respect to what many view as a personal crisis.
The broad overview of an economic downturn, even if graphically displayed in mainstream media with vacant houses or increased queues at labour exchanges, does not reflect the true face of recession because individuals are not willing to be the ‘poster child’ of media representation of what is a deeply personal experience. The threatened loss of a comfortable income and family home can result in feelings of embarrassment, humiliation, helplessness and even self pity.
I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to air those emotions to their neighbours, city, state or countrymen. Humans, by nature, will display these emotions and more, when faced with personal crises and each reaction is as different as the individual.
There are many support groups for the clinical problems people face, but step one is to expose people to hope. With hope comes self esteem and a resultant change of attitude will open up many possibilities to improve your situation. It’s natural to feel helpless if you’ve been told your present skills are no longer required, if left to fester this feeling will press you into inertia. However take heart from the fact you have life skills, which can be adapted to many different industries. It can be daunting to take your future in your own hands, however you used those skills to sign a home contract and a loan for a car, which are huge commitments, so you have the skill, just adapt it to the most important aspect of your life, financial security.
Armed with self esteem you have many opportunities at your disposal. There are countless opportunities available for people who demonstrate that they are prepared to learn new skills or adapt their current skills to new ventures. It’s your attitude that’s important. You worked for a living to this point, so if you are looking to get rich quick to save your current lifestyle there are many people out there, both online and off, who are prepared to ‘fleece’ you.
There are genuine organisations online, which are not only prepared to teach while you earn, but see it as an investment in their future as well as yours. So don’t throw money at the first person who says they can turn your $5 into $5,000 a month. Do some research first, because even $5 is an investment in your future. Your computer can be a valuable tool in researching what you are passionate about, by giving you access to Consumer Advocacy Sites, State & Federal funding, Joint Venture capital, Jobseeker information, resume templates and even reviews on those sites which are bombarding you thoughts of untold riches.
Take it from someone who knows, you will not get rich quick, either online or offline, you will accumulate knowledge and wealth, just as J D Rockfeller, Henry Ford and Bill Gates did. It didn’t happen over night for them. They researched. They invested time and money. They took a chance on themselves. You can do the same and your self esteem will grow by knowing you worked for your reward, rather than giving it away $5 at a time.
