Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through.  Where people fail is that they choose to elect a state and remain in it.  This mentality is not only crippling but if we do not accept a state change then we will be shackled to the life that has been present all along.
You must be willing to step away from the herd and take risks, even jump completely out of your element if that's what it takes for you to change into the person you wish to become.
