     Sure she was attractive and supposedly an expert accountant but I never thought in a million years that the judge wouldn't be able to see right through all the crap to the truth.  Couldn't he see he was being bamboozled by the outright lies about my ex-husband's financial situation?

     I guess I shouldn't be that shocked because after all, my ex did pull the wool over my eyes for years!

     But to leave me penniless with 4 small children to raise all by myself?  I don't mind telling you, I was scared out of mind.

     Every day I feared it would all cave in and the 5 of us would be tossed out on the streets.  I kid you not, sometimes it was a toss up between electricity or food because if the slightest unexpected thing popped up, we were sunk.  And, with 4 young kids there are always unexpected things.  I had to resort to the "cross-my-fingers-and-pray-method" that none of my kids got hurt or sick... and forget about ME... there was no way I could even get the slightest sniffle because we'd be homeless if I stopped for even a second.

     Almost every night after I soothed all 4 of them to sleep, when they couldn't see me, I'd collapse on the cold tile bathroom floor and cry uncontrollably for hours because it felt so hopeless (even though I tried to put on a strong face in front of my kids, I think they knew).

     I certainly didn't feel like a good mom back then.

     It's a terrible way to live.  Actually, it isn't living at all! It was barely surviving, walking the edge of existence.  Scrimping, and literally scraping by the skin of my teeth all just for the privilege of starting all over and doing it again tomorrow. 

     Always in fear.  Always stressed.  Always worried.

     Needless to say, I had to find a better way because I was desperate.

     So, I took a job with a telemarketing company selling credit card fraud protection only to discover (completely by accident after a few months) that this company was in fact a scam itself... I went to the bathroom and threw up because it made me sick to my stomach to realize the company had downright stolen money from people.

     After my stomach calmed down, I quit immediately and made myself a blood oath I'd NEVER get involved with another company without completely researching every aspect front-to-back.

     It wasn't long before I found a direct marketing company that looked very promising on the surface.  But this time I did my due diligence (actually, I went WAY overboard because even though I was still desperate to get out of my situation, there was no way I was going to allow myself to get burned again).

     I was going to know the owners better than their family knew them...  I researched the business and the principle management's history, reputations, and track records...  I made sure the product was top notch and actually delivered on all the promises and claims because I had to believe in the product and business vision.... I needed to know and feel comfortable with the kind of support they offered.... What were their hiring practices?...  What type of people worked with the company?...  Were they trustworthy?... How did past customers feel about both the products and company's business practices itself?

     After all that grueling research, I was sure I found something I could be proud to represent.  In fact, I was excited because it felt like I had found the holy grail of business success. 

     It was an amazing couple of years because for me this company became 'my 5th child'.  I mean, I helped grow it from infancy to a very successful multi-million dollar business with a stellar reputation beyond anything the industry had seen before.

     Then came the shock I never saw coming:

     It was a Monday afternoon.  I walked back into my office after lunch and the short memo was sitting on my desk.  It was from the owner of the company.  He had sold the company to someone else, but everything was supposed to remain the same...

     This idiot killed my 5th baby!
